NAME : Emily
BEFORE WEIGHT : 265
AFTER WEIGHT : 150
POUNDS LOST : 115
WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was a chubby kid, but in middle school is when I first gained a significant amount of weight.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I have always been very sensitive and empathic. I learned that food helped me deal with life when it got to be too much. It held me back most of my life and I never got the chance to really showcase my personality with fear that I would be judged
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
Well I’ve yoyoed many times in my teens and 20’s but at 28 my mom died after a long battle with cancer. I had 2 very small children and I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving them when their babies were small. I was tired of hating Myself and viewing myself as a failure
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Small steps! That’s what made this time so different. I would always go all put and change everything and then give up. This time I just started walking. I was dealing with heavy grieve coupled with post pardum depression and once a day I would just pack the kids in the stroller and walk.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Pretty soon. although I have had some seriously long plateaus.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Keeping focused during my long plateaus. The old me would just say oh well this isn’t worth it. But I’m stuck with it, eating healthy and exercising even when nothing has changed
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes! But I would realize that I feel awful when I don’t eat healthy. And I’d rather be overweight and feel good then fell gross any day.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I am coming off of a 6 month one now! I increased my calories. The first thing you think when the scale stops moving is I need to eat less or move more and most of the time it’s the oposite.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
5 years total although most of it had been in the last 3
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes. I love exercise now, I love to run, I’m strong and fit and have bigger muscles then most people I know
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Well I went vegan about 2 years ago. Before that I was vegetarian. But there was a lot of carbs and sweets. Pasta, bread, cookies cakes. Now I eat mostly whole grains, beans, fruits and veggies and when I do splurge on a treat it’s usually whole grain and moderately healthy. I also have always been a binge eater. So getting control of that has been huge for me.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I would go out of my way to be inactive before and now I do all I can to be active. I love to run around and get a good sweat on. I turned my garage into a gym after my gym got too expensive and now I get out there and busy ass 5-6 days a week
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Start small. Small changes make all the difference
- Don’t do anything you can’t live with forever. Extreme restriction is is as bad as extreme over eating for your success
- Find an exercise you like and build on that. Hate running? Don’t run. If you like your activity your more likely to want to do it.
- Track and plan! If you don’t an your food it’s so much easier to make quick decisions that won’t help your success.
- Find a weightloss buddy. Inspire each other and have fun with it!
